Your memories should outlive us

Every online service can one day disappear. Companies change, products shut down, terms get rewritten. Childhood memories, on the other hand, are supposed to last for decades — to be read when the child becomes an adult, and perhaps passed on to the generation after that. So there is a rule we too rarely think to demand: memories must never be trapped inside a single app.

In Radosnica this rule means something simple. Guardians can download their contents at any time — texts, photos, videos, voice messages — in readable, portable formats that do not depend on this service existing forever. Downloading is not a feature to be unlocked later. It is part of the basic promise, available from day one.

What readable and portable means

Readable means the download can be opened and understood without special software and without our help. Text reads as text, photos view as photos, and the whole thing makes sense outside the app. Portable means the material can live in its own place — on a home drive, in a family archive — and be carried forward when old media wears out.

That is why exporting is not just a technical button but a design decision. The book should read like a book away from the screen too: organised, carrying the themes the family chose, in an order that still makes sense when opened ten years from now. The archive preserves the contents, and the readable view preserves the story.

Honest about the limits

No honest service promises impossible things, and neither do we. So the explanations of backups and exports are written plainly and kept easy to find: what they do, and what they do not guarantee.

• Downloading is always available — guardians never have to wait or pay to reach their own memories.
• Formats stay readable — everything downloads in a way that can be opened and understood without our app.
• Backups have limits — they protect against everyday mishaps, but they are not a promise that nothing can ever be lost.
• Responsibility is shared — we look after the service as best we can, and the family keeps its own archive in its own place.
• Exports are explained — what is and is not included in a download is stated where the download happens, not buried in legal text.

A keepsake that cannot leave the app is not a keepsake — it is a rental. A real keepsake has to be able to go home with the family.

There is one more reason this matters. One day the child will grow up and want to read their own story — perhaps on a device that does not exist yet, at a time when today's services sound distant. If the memories are written in open, understandable formats and the family keeps them close, the story will be there. That is the whole point: the book is for the child, not for us.
